College aims for fame as a striking landmark; pounds 22.5m revamp for training ground of Welsh performers.

Byline: Sarah Miloudi

THIS is the stunning new look for South Wales' very own fame academy.

The Royal Welsh The Royal Welsh (Welsh Y Cymry Brenhinol) was formed on St David's Day, 1 March 2006. It is one of the new large infantry regiments of the British Army, and the regiment's formation was announced on 16 December 2004 by Geoff Hoon and General Sir Mike Jackson as part of  College of Music and Drama in Cardiff is undergoing a pounds 22.5m redevelopment.

And experts hope the scheme, bordering North Road and parkland, will help create a landmark entrance to the capital.

Work has already started on creating the sleek building which will house two new state-of-the-art concert studios close to the city centre.

A 450-seat performance venue and 160-seat courtyard theatre will accompany four acting and movement studios and an exhibition arcade.

It is understood the new multi-million-pound complex will link with the existing campus. The theatre and concert hall will be accessed from a public foyer that opens onto views of the Grade I-listed Bute Park Bute Park in Cardiff, Wales, is an extensive area of mature parkland easily accessible from the city centre. Flanked by the River Taff, Sophia Gardens, Pontcanna Fields and Cardiff Castle, Bute Park is a very popular 'green lung' full of historic and wildlife interest.  and a park-side terrace.

The revamp is all in a bid to build on the profile of the world-renowned college, which includes Hollywood's Sir Anthony Hopkins Noun 1. Sir Anthony Hopkins - Welsh film actor (born in 1937)

Developers Willmott Dixon expect the entire redevelopment to be complete by early 2011. Managing director Neal Stephens said: "The new building will further enhance the college's reputation as a fantastic destination for students, staff and visitors to enjoy.

"Construction has begun on site and we will be working with the college to ensure minimum disruption and inconvenience for all involved."

The city's music and drama centre already hosts around 300 public events a year and hopes that the additional facilities will strengthen its activities programme at home and abroad. Principal Hilary Boulding said: "This new development will allow the college to greatly expand on its range of performances and community activities, as well as our interaction with creative industries both at home and internationally.

"We hope these will act as a magnet to attract the best students and artists."

Last November, opera singer Bryn Terfel launched a drive to raise pounds 4.5m of outstanding funds for the project.

Around pounds 18m had already been raised by the time that Terfel announced his Stage of Success initiative.
