(CMJ CMJ Chinese Medical Journal CMJ College Media Journal CMJ College Mathematics Journal CMJ Complete Metal Jacket CMJ Certified Measuring Judge CMJ Chief of Military Justice CMJ Critical Mass Journal ) will rollout a revolutionary Web-based data collection application in mid-February. The application, created by Context consultants, is designed to efficiently and accurately gather airplay air·play n. The broadcasting of an audio or audiovisual recording on the air over radio or television. airplay Noun the broadcast performances of a record on radio data from 1,000 alternative college, commercial, non-commercial and public radio stations nationwide via the Internet. "We provide summary information to the music community on the top-requested and top-played music at alternative radio stations throughout the U.S.," said Alex Ellerson, general counsel for CMJ. "More than 1,000 stations report their radio airplay data to us on a weekly basis. We compile the information and publish it on our Web-site, in our weekly trade publication and in our monthly consumer magazine. These airplay charts are extremely important to radio programmers and record industry executives who make business decisions based on the data." CMJ sought Context's expertise in system integration and Web and database technology to develop the innovative new system. The company's goal was to reduce the amount of time it took to log and process the data, thereby saving time and money. It also wanted to ensure 100 percent accuracy in its ratings. Before CMJ worked with Context to develop a high-technology data collection system, it recorded its data by hand. For example, when a radio station representative called to report airplay information, a CMJ representative manually logged the data onto a spreadsheet. As the company received more calls, the data was logged in one-at-a-time. Then, on a weekly basis, a CMJ representative entered several spreadsheets of data into a computer database to generate summary information. "Since most of the radio stations that report to CMJ were already connected to the Internet, it made sense for us to develop a solution based on the Web," said Charlie Garland, account manager for Context's New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of office. "It was up to us to decide what technology to use to upgrade CMJ's databases, create a Web interface and meet our deadline. We chose NetDynamics, an advanced rapid application development (RAD (1) (Rapid Application Development) Developing systems incrementally and delivering working pieces every three to four months, rather than waiting until the entire project is programmed before implementing it. ) tool for the Internet, to access data and build the development framework. We also utilized Sybase as the supporting database for its reliability, functionality and scaling capabilities." As a result of this seven-month project, radio station representatives throughout the U.S. will soon be able to send data to CMJ by inputting tallies into their stations' computers and transmitting the information via the Internet directly to CMJ's database. "One of the biggest challenges of the project was to write a system that needed minimal day-to-day maintenance and required no training on the user end," said Dror Liwer, manager of application development for Context's New York office. "We met that challenge by developing an application that features strong data collection and calculation capabilities, and that can be used by anyone, with or without a lot of technology background." Currently, CMJ is still beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the its new technology. "We have worked with numerous outside computer consultants over the years, but the folks at Context have been the most outstanding group we have worked with by a wide margin," said Ellerson. "They have been consistently responsive to our needs, very timely and delivered on their promises. We could not be more pleased." About College Media, Inc.
