The preliminary assessment, which was completed last week, included soil and foundation exploration to better determine the condition of the building's underpinning. It was found that the foundations, made entirely of wood, have been failing due to rot, poor construction and shifting under the building. A 383,000 s/f, 111 First St. is comprised of eight adjoining four-, five- and six-story structures.

Building 1, built around 1870, fronts Washington Street The following streets in the United States are called Washington Street:
  • Washington Street (Alexandria), in Alexandria, Virginia
  • Washington Street (Baltimore), in Baltimore, Maryland, running near Johns Hopkins Hospital
, while the remaining structures were added in subsequent years. The former factory and an adjacent building at 110 First Street were purchased by New Gold Equities in 1991.
