Biomatrix received CE mark approval for Hylaform(R) gel in December 1995, allowing this product to be marketed throughout the European Economic Area European Economic Area: see European Free Trade Association; European Union. . It is the first such product to have received European Area approval for marketing. Clinical studies on Hylaform(R) gel have been conducted in the U.S. and Sweden.

The Appearance Technologies Division of Collagen Corporation plans to begin marketing Hylaform(R) gel this fall outside the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. For these launches, Hylaform(R) gel will not require a test dose prior to treatment and, therefore, is expected to expand the number of new patients treated with injectable products each year. Collagen Corporation will target patients seeking immediate treatment of wrinkles and scars with injectable therapy, as well as those patients who may be sensitive to injectable collagen products.

Collagen Corporation will make an immediate $5 million payment to Biomatrix for the rights to market Hylaform(R) gel in Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada and selected additional markets in Latin America and the Middle East. In addition, Collagen will pay a transfer price for product shipments, as well as royalties on dermal dermal /der·mal/ (der´mal) pertaining to the dermis or to the skin.

The Pre-Market Approval application for Hylaform(R) gel was submitted for filing and review to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in August 1995. Marketing clearance in the U.S. is currently pending. Collagen Corporation has the right to market the product in the U.S., for an additional payment, upon Biomatrix's receipt of U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulatory clearance.
