SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 2004

CollabNet, the leading provider of collaborative software This is a list of collaborative software (or list of groupware) applications. Wiki software is on a list of wiki software. Open source or free software

development solutions, today announced it is integrating the industry's newest open source versioning system, Subversion, into its global software development environment. CollabNet users will have a more powerful alternative to Concurrent Versions System (programming) Concurrent Versions System - (CVS) A cross-platform code management system originally based on RCS.

CVS tracks all revisions to a file in an associated file with the same name as the original file but with the string ",v" (for version) appended to the filename.
(CVS (1) (Concurrent Versions System) A version control system for Unix that was initially developed as a series of shell scripts in the mid-1980s. CVS maintains the changes between one source code version and another and stores all the changes in one file. ). Subversion 1.0, released by CollabNet in February under an Apache-style license, provides significant version control functionality. Subversion, which is already in use on 1,400 publicly accessibly production services, will be integrated in the CollabNet environment in Q2 of this year.

"CollabNet recognized in 2000 that the world needed a better revision control system (software, tool) Revision Control System - (RCS) A version control system that automates the storing, retrieval, logging, identification, and merging of revisions. RCS is useful for text that is revised frequently, for example programs, documentation, graphics, papers, and form . We also realized it was a big task -- not only would it require a significant number of architects, programmers, and testers, it would also have to gain the trust of the user community," said Brian Behlendorf Brian Behlendorf (Born March 30, 1973) is a technologist, computer programmer, and an important figure in the open-source software movement. He was a primary developer of the Apache Web server, the most popular web server software on the Internet, and a founding member of the , CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. See CIO and salary survey.  and co-founder of CollabNet. "We felt the best way to accomplish this was to be an open source project from day one, and build a community by bringing together other developers who we knew shared these goals. We invested heavily in the project by hiring four full-time developers to form an active core team, around which a much larger effort could be coordinated and sustained. The entire effort has been incubated from the very beginning at CollabNet's open source community, Tigris (http://subversion.tigris.org/), using the CollabNet development environment. These Subversion developers working for CollabNet succeeded in building not just a great platform for revision control Revision control (also known as version control (system) (VCS), source control or (source) code management (SCM)) is the management of multiple revisions of the same unit of information. ; they have also built a powerful developer community that is actively evolving Subversion into an enterprise-class application."

The CollabNet environment provides users with applications for software development, knowledge management, and project communication in a project-centric Internet workspace. CollabNet will provide full Subversion support as an integrated component of the CollabNet environment in the second quarter of this year. Organizations that use the CollabNet environment realize substantial return on investment through better management of offshore processes; through co-development with business partners; and through unifying geographically distributed project managers, developers, and business users on an integrated collaborative environment.

Subversion augments the version control capability of the CollabNet environment by providing new features for distributed software development including: versioning of directories, copies, renames, and file metadata; truly atomic commits; enhanced network capabilities; more efficient handling of binary files; and very efficient branching and tagging. These new capabilities, not available in its predecessor, CVS, meet users' long-awaited requirements for improved functionality for storing and tracking code changes, or other versioned artifacts artifacts

. Subversion, when integrated with CollabNet environment tools for issue tracking and project communication, becomes a fully-functional Software Configuration Management System.

"The open source community has produced a large number of desktop clients to work with Subversion. CollabNet supports these projects by providing hosting at Tigris.org," stated Karl Fogel, Subversion team lead at CollabNet. "To pick just a few examples: TortoiseSVN is a Windows client for Subversion that integrates into Windows Explorer See Explorer. , AnkhSVN is a plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio Microsoft Visual Studio is Microsoft's flagship software development product for computer programmers. It centers on an integrated development environment which lets programmers create standalone applications, web sites, web applications, and web services that run on any platforms  .NET, and Subclipse provides Subversion support for the popular open source Eclipse platform."

Since its inception, CollabNet has taken an industry leadership position in helping corporations adopt open source and collaborative software development technologies. The result has been transformative changes in enterprise-collaborative development as well as breakthrough global business benefits. Subversion is the most recent example of CollabNet's continued leadership in this space.

About Subversion

CollabNet is providing Subversion as an open source versioning system meaning anyone can modify and redistribute re·dis·trib·ute

the source code as desired. With Subversion, changes over time to a tree of files in a central repository are tracked. Subversion has a number of key improvements over its predecessor, Concurrent Versions System (CVS), which include; versioning of directories, copies, renames, and file meta-data; truly atomic commits; enhanced network capabilities; using standard protocols supported by the Apache HTTP Server The Apache HTTP Server, commonly referred to simply as Apache, is a web server notable for playing a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web. Apache was the first viable alternative to the Netscape Communications Corporation web server (currently known as Sun  (including WebDAV/DeltaV); more efficient handling of binary files; and very efficient branching and tagging. More information, source code, and binaries are available at http://subversion.tigris.org/.
