CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals Appoints Klaus Theobald SVP and Chief Medical Officer.

) today announced the appointment of Klaus P. Theobald, M.D., as senior vice president and chief medical officer, effective immediately. Dr. Theobald brings 18 years of clinical and regulatory experience at domestic and international life sciences companies. He has a track record of bringing products to market from concept through approval and a demonstrated ability to work with partners in the U.S., Europe and Japan. He will be responsible for developing future products emerging from CollaGenex's proprietary drug development efforts as well as participating in strategic and tactical aspects of the company's future business development activities.

Dr. Theobald joins CollaGenex from Allergenics, Inc., an early-stage biotechnology company focused on oral protein delivery, where he was president and chief executive officer. He previously spent 16 years at Aventis Behring and its predecessor companies in increasingly senior positions, and he most recently served as chief medical officer of Aventis Behring's Genesis Therapeutics subsidiary. During his tenure as vice president, research & development - U.S., of Aventis Behring, Dr. Theobald and his 70-person team negotiated and obtained orphan drug orphan drug, drug developed under the U.S. Orphan Drug Act (1983) to treat a disease that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. , submitted five INDs and overcame a clinical hold, secured three foreign approvals, and achieved additional labeling claims for four products, in addition to overseeing numerous late-stage clinical trials.

Prior to his tenure at Aventis Behring, Dr. Theobald was senior director, worldwide corporate project management, Behringwerke AG, where he managed the transition of the company's R&D organization and obtained approval of new products and additional indications for existing products in the US. He also formerly served as head of clinical research immunology of Behringwerke AG, where he brought four new products to market and obtained re-licensing of 14 additional products.

Dr. Theobald received his doctorate in medicine from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, where he focused on medical microbiology and immunology.

Dr. Theobald will assume the research and development responsibilities previously held by Robert A. Ashley, who will be leaving his position as senior vice president, commercial development of CollaGenex to become chairman, president and chief executive officer of Amplimed Corporation, a privately-held company developing cancer drugs. Mr. Ashley has agreed to serve as a consultant to CollaGenex through the end of the year.
