Cummings served as the Director of Security for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty for 15 years beginning in 1980. In this work, he presents an anecdotal history of the Cold War propaganda stations as presented from the perspective of security and intelligence problems. He describes attempts on the lives of various Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty personnel, the bombing of the stations by the infamous Carlos the Jackel, and other key incidents. He also includes security reports, correspondence between Carlos the Jackal and other conspirators, and other materials in a series of appendices.
