Coinstar Receives Distinguished Category Captain Award for Fourth Consecutive Year.

4th Wall Category Management Program Selected by Progressive Grocer Magazine

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Coinstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSTR), today announced that Progressive Grocer Magazine has awarded Coinstar, Inc., the Category Captain award for "other perimeter" in the nonfood category. For the fourth year in a row, the Coinstar 4th Wall([R]) category management program has been recognized by Progressive Grocer Magazine for lifting sales in the entire category.

"We're honored to receive this prestigious award and to be recognized as an industry leader in category management for the 4th Wall," said Jim Blakely, chief customer officer, Coinstar, Inc. "Coinstar's automated retail solutions help drive incremental store traffic, reduce labor, minimize shrinkage and maximize stores' front-end net profit."

The area between the cash register and the front door is undervalued and therefore underutilized space representing an untapped opportunity for retailers. Discovering the potential of the 4th Wall is Coinstar's vision for offering an analytical process and expertise to maximize profit through front-end operations. If managed effectively, this area is estimated to generate five to ten times the industry average for net profitability per square foot.

Progressive Grocer Magazine is the leading trade publication for the food and beverage industry, and their annual award recognizes the best and most innovative companies in category management. The award is the highest mark of distinction presented by the magazine. Several factors were reviewed during the judging process, including product innovation, consumer insights, dynamic category management tools, and demonstrated commitment to meeting retail customers' specific needs. Complete coverage on Coinstar and the Category Captain awards can be found in Progressive Grocer's November/December 2009 issue or online at
