Coil Stamps Shedding Liner; Postal Service Expands Environmental Efforts.


WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1997--The United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The name derives from the usual handling of long strips, which is to coil them into rolls, in a manner reminiscent of adhesive tape rolls.  on March 14.

At the same time, five mailers from across the country will test the 10,000 and 30,000-stamp coils at their businesses. The purpose of the testing is to determine how well the stamps perform when customers use them and to receive feedback concerning any necessary improvements that need to be made.

The 32 cent Flag Over Porch Stamp will be issued in coils of 100 with and without a dispenser, and the non-denominated First Class Pre-sort Juke Box stamp will be released in coils of 10,000 and 30,000. The Juke Box stamp will also be sold in strips of seven (including a plate number), mounted on a special release liner for collection and/or storage. Both stamps have the same design as the ones currently in use.

The Postal Service has a long-standing commitment to improving the environment through programs such as converting vehicles to compressed natural gas Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a substitute for gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel. It is considered to be an environmentally "clean" alternative to those fuels. It is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed by methane (CH4 , recycling close to one million tons of waste paper last year, and reducing the usage of targeted hazardous chemicals by one half. Not only will these coil stamps reduce waste, but the adhesive on the stamps is more easily recycled.
