A monthly periodical, Quality reports on the use of metrology methods, statistical analysis and process improvement techniques that are used to improve quality on the shop floor and in manufacturing planning. Coherix's technology is producing a high-definition measurement of valve-body surfaces at the Ford facility - 4 million points at 1 micron accuracy - to precisely measure and control zone and overall flatness.

The company's digital holography Digital holography refers to the science and the process of acquiring three-dimensional signals that enable the high-definition measurement of the surface dimensions of an object or an assembly of objects, and in which multi-wavelength optical imaging interferometry is employed to  equipment, known as ShaPix, was installed directly on the plant floor to provide rapid process feedback, Quality noted. The equipment captures 3-D holographic images of parts, providing surface detail information within 38 seconds.

"We are proud to have our equipment installed at a major automaker's transmission plant," said Dwight Carlson, the company's board chairman and chief executive officer. "We founded Coherix in 2003 to help the automotive industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide.  improve quality and provide better products to customers.

"If you can measure the details of a product better, you can learn how to build it better. That leads to superior quality, reduced warranty costs and improved vehicle values, helping both consumers and manufacturers."

Ford Motor Company's Van Dyke Transmission Plant received Quality Magazine's 2008 Plant of the Year award. Recently renovated, the facility features a number of new technologies, process changes and workforce efforts to improve quality.

Ford executives will receive the Quality Magazine honor during ceremonies to be held April 29 at a quality conference in Clearwater, Florida Clearwater is a city located in central Pinellas County, Florida, USA, nearly due west of Tampa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 108,787; however, according to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau's estimates, the city's population fell slightly to 108,687. .

A privately-held supplier of high-tech optical-based measurement and inspection products for the automotive and semiconductor industries, the Ann Arbor-based company recently helped found the Powertrain Engineering & Manufacturing Alliance (PEMAlliance) which is conducting a three-year, $12-million research program to develop advanced 3-D digital, high-definition holographic imaging and inspection systems to improve the quality of automotive engine and powertrain components.

Coherix supplies high-definition measurement products to assist customers in the semiconductor and automotive industries in the management of precision manufacturing processes.
