Coherent has achieved a 26.2% five-year average return on equity, just two years after going public, attributing much of its success to a highly specialized focus in voice enhancement technology.

Each year, Forbes applies a stringent set of criteria to eligible companies, identifying 5,700 public companies in 1996 that met the maximum sales level of $350 million. This list was narrowed down to 250 companies, which were then evaluated based on return on equity, sales growth, earnings growth and debt-to-equity ratios, all across a five-year period.

Other major listings achieved by Coherent this year include the Individual Investor's 50 Great Stocks/New Technologies, Buyside's recommended stock, Business Week 100 FastestGrowing Small Companies and the Sixth Annual Upside 200.
