Coherence between nodes of a dual multiplexed trap. (News Briefs).

In order to build a multiplexed quantum computer (computer) quantum computer - A type of computer which uses the ability of quantum systems, such as a collection of atoms, to be in many different states at once. In theory, such superpositions allow the computer to perform many different computations simultaneously.  based on trapped ions, coherence coherence, constant phase difference in two or more Waves over time. Two waves are said to be in phase if their crests and troughs meet at the same place at the same time, and the waves are out of phase if the crests of one meet the troughs of another.  must be maintained as ion qubits are transferred between traps.

This was recently demonstrated at NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology.  by a variation of a Ramsey experiment. In a three-step process on a single ion, a [pi]/2 pulse was first applied to the ion as it sat in trap 1. The ion was then shuttled to trap 2 where it was subjected to a pi pulse. Finally, it was shuttled back to trap 1 where another [pi]/2 pulse was applied to it. This sequence of pulses was similar to that typically applied to an ion in a single trap to achieve Ramsey interrogation interrogation

In criminal law, process of formally and systematically questioning a suspect in order to elicit incriminating responses. The process is largely outside the governance of law, though in the U.S.
, but here the ion had been shuttled between traps during the experiment to determine whether coherence was lost in the process of shuttling. The three-pulse ("spin-echo") technique is relatively immune to slow drifts in magnetic field over the averaging time of the experiment, but it is sensitive to the coherence between traps 1 and 2.

The observed high level of the Ramsey-fringe contrast demonstrated that coherence was maintained.
