Cohen, Rau, Hutchison Recognized for Contributions to Tax Field.

TEI's Board of Directors voted to honor a former IRS Commissioner, a former International President, and a former chair of three TEI committees when it met on March 20: Sheldon Cohen, who served as Commissioner in the 1960s; Charles Rau, who served as 1986-1987 President; and James Hutchison, who served as chair of Canadian Income, Canadian Commodity, and Electronic Data Processing Committees. These awards will be presented next October at the Annual Conference in Philadelphia.

Sheldon Cohen was appointed Chief Counsel of the IRS in 1963, and became Commissioner in 1965, the youngest person ever to hold that position. Since he left government service in 1969, he has had a distinguished career as a Washington attorney; he currently is of counsel to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

Chuck Rau retired recently from MCI WorldCom following an extraordinarily active TEI career. In addition to his service as President, Rau represented TEI on the Commissioner's Advisory Group as well as on a congressional task force on penalty reform. He also served in a number of capacities at the chapter and Institute level, including president of the Wisconsin Chapter and chair of the Federal Tax Committee.

Jim Hutchison retired recently from Trizec Corporation. During his nearly two decades of membership, he not only chaired the three committees listed above, but also served as president of the Toronto Chapter, regional vice president, and a member of the Executive Committee.

In announcing the awards following the Board's March 20 meeting, TEI President Les Ezrati said, "The tax community as a whole owes a debt of gratitude to Sheldon, Chuck, and Jim. On behalf of TEI, I offer them congratulations and thanks for their outstanding service."
