Cognos will provide a link to Express software in future versions of PowerPlay, the company's $695 multidimensional analysis software.

With the addition of the Express API, Cognos' PowerPlay increases its built-in support for the leading OLAP server packages, making it easier for companies to widely deploy information access and data analysis for corporate managers. PowerPlay's PC-based multidimensional On-line Analytical Processing (database) On-Line Analytical Processing - (OLAP) A category of database software which provides an interface such that users can transform or limit raw data according to user-defined or pre-defined functions, and quickly and interactively examine the results in various dimensions  (OLAP) software for personal computers will integrate support for Oracle Corp.'s Express OLAP server software, extending PowerPlay's position as the leading client-side software package for OLAP and data warehousing applications.

"As Oracle clearly recognized with its acquisition of the Express technology earlier this year, OLAP and data warehousing are of major strategic importance to vendors and users alike," said Alan Rottenberg, senior vice president for Cognos Business Intelligence products. "By supporting all of the major OLAP and data warehousing server systems such as Oracle, Cognos plays an increasingly central role at the desktop. In fact, with support for Arbor Software's Essbase already shipping, and with support for Pilot's Lightship lightship, moored vessel bearing lights and other signal devices to guide ships and warn of hazards to navigation. Lightships are generally stationed at points where a lighthouse cannot be erected; they are given distinctive features (e.g.  on the way, PowerPlay is now the de facto [Latin, In fact.] In fact, in deed, actually.

universal OLAP client with the broadest range of server support in the industry."

Many Fortune 1000 companies are turning to data warehousing and OLAP solutions to gain a competitive edge. Currently a $1.5 billion market, data warehousing activity is expected to grow to more than $6.9 billion by 1999, according to the Gartner Group.

To let customers take advantage of this growing opportunity, the Oracle-Cognos partnership provides an open choice of database front and back ends. Combined with Express' open API, PowerPlay's PC-based multidimensional engine now lets users choose the optimum platform for multidimensional processing: the PC for fast, intuitive interaction with moderate amounts of data (with the option of disconnected, mobile OLAP usage), or the server for accessing and analyzing larger and more complex data sets. PowerPlay also directly and automatically creates local multidimensional extracts from other popular heterogeneous data sources through PowerPlay's Transformer program.
