The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  agreement with the Prometrix division of Tencor Instruments, a Mountain View, CA-based manufacturer of inspection and measurement systems for semiconductor production.

Under the agreement, the Prometrix division expects to purchase more than $3.7 million of Cognex 5000 Series machine vision systems over the next 18 months.

Tencor integrates the Cognex vision systems into its Prometrix wafer metrology systems that measure the thickness of films that are placed on semiconductor wafers during manufacturing. The Cognex vision system will be used to automatically align each wafer prior to thin film measurement to ensure accurate results.
