These revenue and earnings projections are substantially below the company's current expectations for revenue and earnings for the fourth quarter of 2000 (ending on December 31, 2000) of approximately $65 million and approximately $0.36 per share respectively.

"As a result of both the decreased level of bookings in this fourth quarter from many of our customers in the semiconductor and electronics industries and push-outs of orders that had been scheduled for shipment in the first quarter of 2001, we believe that revenue for the first quarter of 2001 will be down substantially on a sequential basis," said Dr. Robert J. Shillman, Cognex's President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman. "The projected large decrease in sequential earnings in the first quarter of 2001 is due, in large part, to the lower revenue expectation for that quarter. However, in spite of in opposition to all efforts of; in defiance or contempt of; notwithstanding.

"Although we have no visibility for customer demand beyond the first quarter of 2001, we are planning conservatively for the entire year. Our conservativism is based on both the slowdown that we are currently experiencing and on the potential of a downturn in the U.S. economy, in light of the negative financial news being reported daily by manufacturers in a wide variety of industries," Dr. Shillman continued.
