Cogentrix, CP&L amend agreements.

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1996--Cogentrix Energy Inc. (Cogentrix) and Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) have announced amended electric power sales agreements involving five Cogentrix generating plants located throughout CP&L's service area.

Under the amended agreements, Cogentrix will retain ownership of its facilities and will continue to provide process steam to industrial companies under contract.

The revised agreements also call for Cogentrix plants at Lumberton, Elizabethtown, Kenansville, Roxboro and Southport to be dispatched Dispatched was a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1992 by Daniel Lundberg.  by CP&L along with other generating plants in order to achieve the most efficient mix of generation sources available. The five plants have a combined generating capacity of 262,500 kilowatts.

The arrangement extends through 2000 for the Lumberton and Elizabethtown plants, through 2001 for the Kenansville plant and 2002 for the Roxboro and Southport plants. Through these agreements, CP&L will save about $30 million per year in energy costs, or about $175 million over the life of the contracts.

"This is a win/win for CP&L and Cogentrix," said James M. Davis Jr., CP&L's senior vice president of Power Operations. "CP&L and our customers will benefit from the reduction in our operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales , and Cogentrix will continue to serve the needs of its own customers."

"We are pleased that the resulting arrangement will enable our plants to continue serving our industrial hosts in the five communities with their process steam needs, while also providing CP&L with responsive electricity for delivery to its own customers.
