Cogent Light and Henke-Sass Wolf announce partnership to produce new generation of endoscopes; Micro Illumination technology on display at American College of Surgeons Meeting Oct. 7-10.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1996--Cogent Light Technologies Inc. and Henke-Sass Wolf GmbH announced the formation of a partnership Monday to develop a new generation of surgical and industrial endoscopes that incorporate Micro Bundle (TM) illumination technology developed by Cogent.

Cogent Light is a pioneer in the field of advanced illumination systems. Micro Bundle illumination is a part of Cogent Light's broader Micro Illumination technology, which involves delivery of light through a single fiber.

The advantages and benefits intrinsic to Micro Bundle illumination are reduction in the size of the illumination channel in surgical instruments and simplified transfer of light to the surgical source. The result is expanded capabilities and flexibility in the design of new endoscopes and lighted instruments.

"The advantages of Micro Bundle illumination for endoscopes include smaller size, the addition of working channels, and use of larger optics -- without increasing cost," said Armin Lekitsch, vice president of marketing and sales for Henke-Sass Wolf. For surgeons Micro Bundle illumination means enhanced visualization and versatility during minimally invasive surgeries. For patients, it enables expansion of less invasive surgery Invasive surgery

According to Doug Brenner, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Cogent Light, "Micro Bundle technology is the first major innovation in endoscopic illumination in 30 years. We are looking at a major leap forward in endoscopic surgery."

Henke-Sass Wolf is a leading innovator and developer of endoscopes which have become standards in the industry worldwide.

Cogent Light, a privately held company backed by John Kluge's company, Metromedia, and located in Santa Clarita, Calif., develops, manufactures, and distributes advanced illumination systems for medical and industrial applications. Cogent Light invented Micro Illumination technology that utilizes a single fiber, 1/100th the size of a standard fiber bundle light guide, to deliver more light to the surgical site. Its Micro Bundle technology and Micro Illumination products are available through direct and OEM sales.
