Coel, Margaret. Killing raven.COEL, Margaret. Killing raven. Penguin, Berkley, Prime Crime. 291p. c2003. 0-42519750-6. $6.99. SA Another in the mystery series set on an Arapaho Arapaho (ərăp`əhō), Native North Americans of the Plains whose language belongs to the Algonquian branch of the Algonquian-Wakashan linguistic stock (see Native American languages). Their own name was Inuna-ina (our people), but they were referred to as "dog eaters" (for the obvious reason) by other Native Americans. Reservation featuring the lawyer Vicky, an Arapaho woman struggling to make a living practicing law there, and Father John O'Malley, a priest. The two have an intensely close relationship, but Father John stays true to his vows. The murders this time involve the running of a new gambling casino on the reservation. Vicky is called in to help a fellow lawyer, Adam Lone Eagle, represent the company that runs the casino; soon they uncover corruption and their own lives are in danger. As usual Coel tells us quite a bit about the traditions and the values of the Arapaho Indians in this community, naturally woven into the fabric of the story. Reminiscent of Tony Hillerman's novels set among the Navaho Navaho: see Navajo, people; Navajo, language. people. Claire Rosser, KLIATT |
