Coed rescues boaters.

Alana Schutt is a college student who lives on Martha Lake Martha Lake may be one of several places in the United States:

in Snohomish County, Washington Snohomish County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. It is named after the Snohomish tribe. Since 2000, the county's population has grown from 606,024 to 686,300 residents (2007 figures), making it one of the fastest-growing in the state, ranking third in overall . On May 31, Alana was watching three boaters out on the lake, when she decided that something didn't seem quite right.

"I could just see their boat was very full of water," Alana told Seattle's KOMO Komo Kommodore (German Squadron Commander)  news.

"I noticed he was much bigger than I thought he was," the heroic student told reporters. "He was yelling, 'I'm not going to make it, hurry.'"

Amazingly, Alana was able to pull the 250-pound man into her boat. She then paddled toward the other two men who were by that time also in the water and helped them get back into their own boat. Finally, she swam swam

Alana's father, Len Schutt, told reporters: "The sheriff, the fire department, they were all glowing. They said. 'You can't believe what your daughter just did.' [The sheriff and firefighters] weren't even wet. Yeah, they were impressed."

Alana was less impressed with her own role in the rescue than on the need for water safety: "Life jackets would have made a big difference in the whole situation. One guy, if I hadn't been there, would have drowned probably."

Alana is now a two-time hero on Martha Lake. A few years ago, she and her father rescued a man who almost drowned when his legs became entangled en·tan·gle
