Coco's Cafe & Bakery Debuts in San Diego; San Diego is First in Coco's New Restaurant Roll Out.


IRVINE, Calif. --(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1999--

Following the test of three prototype restaurants, San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  is first in a systemwide roll out of Coco's new restaurant concept, Coco's Cafe & Bakery.

Two of the first San Diego locations to feature the new image are the Coco's restaurants at 5955 Balboa Blvd. and 3821 Sports Arena Blvd. A third Coco's Cafe & Bakery will open in Escondido at 1280 West Valley Parkway. The Balboa Blvd. Coco's Cafe & Bakery will open Wednesday, Aug. 4, with the other two locations scheduled to open later this month.

Giving a brand new look and feel to the West's favorite family dining restaurant, Coco's new restaurant concept, Coco's Cafe & Bakery, continues the company's aggressive push to move into more contemporary family dining. That push began in April with the opening of the chain's first prototype Coco's Cafe & Bakery in Cerritos, Calif.

The new restaurant features rustic, contemporary styling and a more relaxed dining atmosphere. Roll out of the new design throughout the chain is scheduled over the next two years, with plans to complete the San Diego market first.

Coco's roots are traced to Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  where the first Coco's restaurant opened more than 50 years ago. "San Diego is an important market for Coco's and one where we have built considerable equity and presence. With Coco's Cafe & Bakery, we're setting a new standard for family dining in San Diego," said Craig Bushey, president of Coco's.

"The new restaurant offers consumers a whole new dining experience by blending innovative new menu offerings with exceptional service in a brand new atmosphere that's both relaxed and contemporary."

All three restaurants offer seating for more than 130 guests. Upon entering the restaurants, guests are greeted by an expanded bakery area where new specialties such as biscotti Biscotti (plural of Italian biscotto, roughly meaning "twice baked") are crisp Italian cookies often containing nuts or flavored with anise. Traditionally, biscotti are made by baking cookie dough in two long slabs, cutting these into slices, and reheating them to dry , scones, croissants and puff pastries are featured alongside Coco's signature collection of fresh baked fruit pies, cream pies, cookies and muffins.

The new restaurants will be open seven days a week. All locations will open at 6:30 a.m. and close from 10 p.m. to midnight, depending on the location and day. Each restaurant will have a staff of approximately 60 employees.

Vicky Schoonderwoerd leads the team at the Balboa Blvd. location, and Rene Salcido and Larry Estis will serve as the general managers at the Sports Arena and West Valley Parkway locations, respectively.
