Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. ) has purchased Intergraph's InService(TM) suite for outage and mobile workforce management. Located in Marietta, Georgia, Cobb EMC is an electric cooperative serving more than 170,000 customers in five metropolitan Atlanta counties. The contract includes software and professional services. The selection follows a successful pilot involving an InService-based early Outage Management System An Outage Management System (OMS) is a computer system used by operators of electric distribution systems to assist in restoration of power. Major functions usually found in an OMS include:

Cobb EMC selected InService to replace its manual method of locating outages and dispatching crews and gain a consolidated environment for trouble and service order-related work, further streamlining work processes and increasing service reliability. As an OMS, InService automates trouble analysis and enhances service reliability, speeding restoration time during power outages. For optimal crew dispatch and visual tracking, Cobb EMC is deploying InService's Automated Vehicle Location (AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) See mobile positioning. ) function for trucks equipped with GPS. In addition, the OMS will integrate with the utility's Customer Information System (CIS Cis (sĭs), same as Kish (1.)

According to Corbitt Clift, Manager, Special Projects, Cobb EMC, "Once the full suite of InService products is implemented, it will enable our employees to better respond to customer needs and provide quality service to our existing and future customers. The system will improve our efficiency by reducing the time to respond to an outage and connect new services."

InService's mobile workforce management component will help Cobb EMC optimize scheduling of its daily work orders. The solution's automatic dispatch capability assigns routine work to crews and performs same-day workload balancing of elements, such as crew location, shortest route, type of work, cost of service, customer priority and time. In this capacity, InService will share information with Cobb EMC's CIS and Work Order systems via IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  WebSphere(R) MQ middleware.

Whether working from a dispatch, Web or mobile platform, users will be able to view the same geospatial facility network, ensuring accurate data sharing and unifying decision support across the enterprise. InService is a commercial off-the-shelf system, yet is open and flexible enough to be easily configured via non-proprietary, standard tools to meet Cobb EMC's specific requirements.

Arthur Spencer, Executive Vice President, Utilities & Communications division, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions, said, "Cobb EMC has been a valued customer for more than a decade and we are honored by their confidence in our geospatial solutions. By implementing InService, Cobb EMC leverages its existing Intergraph geospatial technology to lay the foundation for improved service reliability, increased productivity and streamlined work processes."
