Coatings institute announces short course on basics.

The Coatings Institute at the Missouri University of Science & Technology, Rolla, MO, will hold a short course on "The Basic Composition of Coatings." To be offered on March 26-30, the course will introduce the technical aspects of paint manufacture, testing, and use to those new to the industry, as well as those involved in raw material manufacture, sales, and technical service.

Topics of discussion will include the history of paint, materials used in manufacture, and simple formulating techniques that can be put to immediate use. In addition, the course will focus on the equipment used to make and test modern protective coatings, and modern chemical instrumentation as applied to coatings. Simple cost accounting that allows beginners to start on a stable economic basis will also be covered.

Over four hours of demonstrations are included throughout the lecture period on topics such as paint milling, color development, and testing. Particular attention will be given to the needs of newcomers to the coatings industry who are employed in laboratories, production units, or marketing groups. Previous experience in the coatings field is not required.
