The Coates Spherical Rotary Valve System is a radical departure from the conventional poppet valve poppet valve
n.
An intake or exhaust valve, operated by springs and cams, that plugs and unplugs its opening by axial motion.

Noun 1.
. Procedurally, it alters the flow and the means of delivering the air and fuel mixture to the firing chamber and of expelling the exhaust produced when the mixture ignites. The "Coates" system utilizes spherical valves, which rotate in a cavity formed between a two-piece alloy cylinder head. The valves include channels, which connect to the intake and exhaust passages.

Coates stated, "The spherical rotary valve system provides such substantial benefits that this system has the potential to integrate within and revolutionize engine manufacturing and design. The Company's facility has already been visited by and hosted tours to the major manufacturers, and dialogue regarding the use of the technology is ongoing. Coates went on to say, "The major advantages of the Coates design include: Substantially lower CO carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; , HC hydrocarbon and NOX oxides of nitrogen emissions, Increased engine efficiency, Use of lower octane fuel, Elimination of oil from engine valves, Reduced lubrication lubrication, introduction of a substance between the contact surfaces of moving parts to reduce friction and to dissipate heat. A lubricant may be oil, grease, graphite, or any substance—gas, liquid, semisolid, or solid—that permits free action of  and maintenance requirements, Reduced manufacturing costs, Reduced fuel consumption".

The Coates system's unique design also provides the company the flexibility to retrofit the system to internal combustion engines of all sizes. This adaptability, along with the system's capability of running on alternative fuels, opens markets that include automobiles and light trucks, heavy trucks and machinery, marine engines, military equipment, light aircraft and helicopters, lawnmowers and generators.

CIL has already completed forty-two prototypes of different types and sizes equipped with the spherical rotary valve system, five for automobiles and four for motorcycles. The most recent automobile prototype has been started over 7,000 times and has been road tested over 40,000 miles and has been running for more than fourteen years.
