Coastal to construct ammonia plant at Freeport, Texas; Air Liquide America to supply hydrogen & nitrogen.HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1996--The Coastal Corporation announced today that its subsidiary Coastal Refining & Marketing, Inc., has received approval from Coastal's board of directors to construct an ammonia plant near Freeport, Texas Freeport is a city in Brazoria County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown Metropolitan Area and is situated in Southeast Texas. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 12,708 and is about sixteen miles away from Angleton. , 45 miles south of Houston. "This project is another example of our success in creating opportunities for expanding our chemical operations," said David A. Arledge, chief executive officer of The Coastal Corporation. Coastal purchased the plant from Dakota Gasification Company The Dakota Gasification Company started in 1984 in Beulah, North Dakota with the Great Plains Synfuels Plant. The plant uses lignite coal to make synthetic natural gas. The synthetic natural gas is piped to the Northern Border Pipeline which supplies homes and businesses in the in April and moved it to Texas City, Texas, from its original site at Plaquemine, La., where it had been in storage since January. Once installed at Freeport, the plant will produce 660 tons per day of anhydrous an·hy·drous adj. Without water, especially water of crystallization. anhydrous (anhī´drus), adj without water. anhydrous containing no water. ammonia, to be marketed to industrial customers in the local area. Air Liquide America Corporation has been awarded a contract to supply Coastal with nitrogen and hydrogen feedstocks. To meet Coastal's hydrogen need, Air Liquide will construct a new hydrogen purification facility to produce up to 45 million standard cubic feet of hydrogen per day. The hydrogen plant will be located in Freeport, adjacent to a carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide; plant also to be constructed by Air Liquide. The hydrogen plant will receive hydrogen-rich tailgas from The Dow Chemical Company's facility in Freeport, and Air Liquide will purify the stream for delivery to Coastal. Nitrogen will be supplied to Coastal from Air Liquide's existing industrial gas pipeline network located along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast. "This new service we are providing Coastal is evidence of Air Liquide's commitment to provide creative solutions to our customers' needs," said Gary McDow, Air Liquide's area vice president, Texas Gulf Coast. Both the ammonia plant and the hydrogen plant are expected to be fully operational in November 1997. Air Liquide America is part of Air Liquide Group, the world's largest industrial gas organization, headquartered in Paris, France. It specializes in industrial gases such as cryogenic and non-cryogenic oxygen and nitrogen, as well as carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. , argon argon (är`gŏn) [Gr.,=inert], gaseous chemical element; symbol Ar; at. no. 18; at. wt. 39.948; m.p. −189.2°C;; b.p. −185.7°C;; density 1.784 grams per liter at STP; valence 0. , acetylene acetylene (əsĕt`əlēn') or ethyne (ĕth`īn), HC≡CH, a colorless gas.
