Coalition to improve management.

The Coalition to Improve Management in State and Local Government has released Ten Ways to Improve Management in State and Local Government, the seventh in its series of management guides.

NLC is among the 21 public interest groups and federal agencies which sponsor the commission.

The volume focuses on the executive management role of the governor and on organizational and administrative options to produce better results.

Officials of large local governments will also find the guide helpful.

Each of the 10 sections provides governors, their executive staffs, department heads and legislators with checklists of successful initiatives of the most innovative states.

The guide recognizes the increasing dependency of state on intergovernmental cooperation to provide services and calls a system of local government in which cities can similarly modernize their structures and management a core requirement.

The volume notes the changes in the intergovernmental scene which have brought creation of state department of community affairs and appointment of state-local liaison officers to governors' staffs and urges governors to cultivate cooperative relationships with local governments and their state and national associations.
