Coalition for Luggage Security Reports That Luggage Screening is Operationally Inefficient.

NEW YORK -- The Coalition for Luggage Security, reports the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform held a hearing on in-line baggage screening systems at Dulles International Airport last week, with U.S. Reps. Rom Davis (R-11th), Jim Moran (D-8th) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) asking officials how such systems can increase safety for passengers flying from Dulles and Reagan National Airport.

James Bennett, president and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, said "the current system of screening checked baggage at our two airports, which is solely and exclusively the responsibility of the federal government, is not capable of meeting the current demand, is operationally inefficient, consumes an inordinate amount of Transportation Security Administration resources and is incapable of meeting the projected demand for our airports."

"We are investing nearly $8 million, at authority expense, designing in-line systems that both meet the demands of Dulles and Reagan National for checked baggage screening while improving the security of the aviation system," he continued. "The estimated cost of constructing in-line baggage screening systems at both Dulles and Regan National is $316 million."
