Coal comfort for young football stars.


Young footballers from former North East coalfield areas have triumphed in a national tournament.

Two sides from Durham City Durham City could be:
  • The city of Durham, County Durham
  • The City of Durham local government district
  • The Northern League football team Durham City A.F.C.
 came out on top in the contest staged to give a boost to former mining towns.

They romped home to victory against teams from across Britain in the grand finals of the Game On Midnight Leagues in Sheffield.

All the players were cheered on by Minister for Sport Richard Caborn, who was on hand to present the winners' trophies.

He said: "The Game On Midnight Leagues have been a big success, and I think this finals day is a testament to that.

"By using football as a tool for social inclusion, Game On has helped give these kids something positive and beneficial to do in the evenings, and it's clear that they love it."

The Durham City Premiership and Durham City Championship teams took on sides from Barnsley, Chesterfield, Bassetlaw, Wakefield, Rotherham, Mansfield, Ashfield and Doncaster.
