On reaching out to communities with the Child I.D. Kit ...

"We have an immediate opportunity every time we are involved in our communities and our states to do something positive for the youth of America. There are so many negative things out there that cause our youth to go in the wrong direction. The things that the FBI preaches and the AFCA preaches, we are all in agreement that coaches can help make our communities, our state and our country better places to live safely. As coaches, I don't think it is an opportunity, but an obligation. I just feel fortunate that we're in a situation where we can help the youth in America."

On what it takes to become a good coach and achieve the highest level of coaching that each person dreams of ...

"The one thing that I learned pretty quick is, and it's a motto for me, 'Make yourself do what you need to do, not what you want to do.' That is probably the best advice that I can give anybody out there right now. When you are in this business or here in this convention, and we are all products of this, sometimes it's a lot easier to sit outside that door to talk and reminisce rem·i·nisce
intr.v. rem·i·nisced, rem·i·nisc·ing, rem·i·nisc·es
To recollect and tell of past experiences or events.

instead of coming in and listening to these meetings and learning as much as you possibly can. You've got to be self-disciplined, make yourself do things that you don't want to do. Again, it's all a sacrifice. It's all a sacrifice of getting to where you want to be in this profession. The pot at the end of the rainbow end of the rainbow

On the dangers of gambling ...

"The main problem I think that we have is convincing people, our coaches, our educators and our parents that there really is a problem with gambling in this country. I am trying to tell you guys that you shouldn't be gambling. Stats are showing that seven out of 10 Americans gamble on something everyday of the week, whether it be bingo, the lottery, internet, sports, casinos or whatever it might be. I have to stand up in front of a number of super-stars and a number of kids between the ages of 18 and 24 that really believe they know it all, and I am trying to say they shouldn't gamble."

BOB STOOPS

Head Coach University of Oklahoma University of Oklahoma, abbreviated OU, is a coeducational public research university located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma.

On the coaching profession ...

"I think we are in the best profession in the world. I can remember coming to this convention as a graduate assistant and I couldn't get a coach to shake my hand or give me an interview for a job. I worked as a volunteer assistant for five years before Dick Crum at Kent State gave me my first opportunity, coaching defensive ends. I know this is a tough profession and I admire every coach in this association, no matter what level they coach on. We are impacting the lives of young people each and every day and that is important."
