McCartney released a statement about his upcoming maiden appearance at an American festival saying, ?I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world. I?m really excited to get out there and rock.? As for My Bloody Valentine, the band was slated to play at last year?s Coachella, but frontman Kevin Shields decided to pull the recently reunited band from the lineup last minute because he didn?t feel they were ready yet. Amy Winehouse will take the stage for her first major American appearance since her 2008 Grammy Awards performance, but is no newbie to Coachella; in 2007 Winehouse performed at Coachella in the midst of her breakout success with her single ?Rehab? and her album Back to Black, although in the past year or so her drug problems and personal struggles have overshadowed her music. Leonard Cohen?s Coachella appearance will be a stop in his North American tour, which kicks off February 19th in New York and is his first in 15 years.

Coachella is known for delivering equal parts indie rock and dance/electronica, and 2009 delivers ample bands from each camp. Among the indie rockers who will perform are Fleet Foxes, the Hold Steady, the Black Keys, TV on the Radio, Dr. Dog, Band of Horses and Okkervil. The electronic community will be represented by Girl Talk, MSTRKRFT, Thievery Corporation, Throbbing Gristle, Groove Armada, Roni Size and the Crystal Method. New bands who have been added to the lineup, and will likely blow up after their Coachella appearance, are the Airborne Toxic Event, Cage the Elephant, Gang Gang Dance, Vivian Girls, Lykke Li, Late Of The Pier, the Knux, the Gaslight Anthem, Hercules and Love Affair, N.A.S.A. and White Lies, who currently hold the number one album in the U.K. Black soul legend Booker T & the MGs will perform April 18 along with the Drive-By Truckers and rock vets Paul Weller, Henry Rollins, Bob Mould and X will also perform.
