After some parents apparently complained about the prayer, school district officials told the coach that he would have to stop. After searching his conscience, Borden decided there was only one thing he could do as a matter of principle: he resigned from his position as coach.

"I'm very disappointed," Borden said in an interview with News 12 New Jersey on October 11. "Do I feel we were violating someone's rights? I don't think so."

"I'm not out preaching, I'm not a preacher," Borden told the reporter. He noted that coaches across the state and nation have often led prayers before sporting events.

"I believe that I made the right decision," Borden continued. "I believe I made a decision based on principle. I believe that's who I am."
