Author Dickinson tells the story of Tommy Thompson, a Cherokee Indian who became a star college football player and later a legendary football coach. Thompson attended a government-run boarding school in 1915 with few prospects for a future until he later found success as an athlete. During his 11 years as football coach, Thompson taught his players the life skills and values they would need to succeed. The author relates the story based on first-hand reminiscences and stories told by the men Thompson had coached.
