And their tradition of municipal republicanism meant that the co-ops were not just businesses, but along with the Government attended to the social and training needs of the workers and of the community.

Now in a region with a population of about four million, there are 90,000 businesses (one for every 45 residents or so!). Roughly a sixth of them are co-ops, including two of the five largest. Emilia Romagna is the most prosperous region in Italy and one of the ten most prosperous in Europe. The co-ops operate in retail, construction, agricultural production, housing, manufacturing and social services social services
