Co-op's pounds 500,000 dividend; TOBACCO: Ethical stand benefits thousands of people.

Byline: Tina Junday

THE Heart of England Co-op has pledged pounds 500,000 of its profits from the sale of cigarettes and tobacco to charities across Coventry and Warwickshire. Thousands of people are set to benefit from the scheme, Helping Hearts, which was launched by the retailer nine years ago.

The Co-op felt it was wrong to profit from tobacco and instead decided to use the cash to help charities and groups in need of financial support.

Ali Kurji, chief executive of the society, said the donations, between pounds 10 and pounds 1,000, have made a real difference to the lives of thousands of people.

He said: "The very foundations of this society are built on our pride as an ethical retailer. We hope our profits help to improve the lives and quality of life of our customers and members, their children and their communities."

Some of the charities to benefit include school children at Balsall Common Balsall Common (often known as Balsall Compton) is a large village and one of the larger rural settlements in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, situated seven miles (eleven km) west of Coventry and 13 miles (21 km) to the east of Birmingham, to which it serves as a  Primary.
