Club scene cranks it up for new year.

Ahhh, the January doldrums. We're exhausted from the string of holiday parties. We've taken too big a chunk out of our credit card limit. The rain just doesn't want to stop.

The bigger touring acts are either still on vacation or just warming up for the season, so some of the bigger venues in the area are quiet.

Not so the clubs, where local bands will take a starring role. Things there are getting busy again.

Country, funk, glam, straight-up rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music. , jazz, blues, folk-rock - they're all on the menu somewhere in Lane County this weekend and beyond.

And let's not Let's Not is a science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov. It was first published in Boston University Graduate Journal in December 1954. It was written for no payment as a favour to the journal, and later appeared in the collection Buy Jupiter.  forget the Elvis impersonators tonight at the annual Night of the Living Elvis tribute at John Henry's, followed on Saturday by the CBGB's tribute, featuring Blondie, Misfits and Ramones cover bands.

See, there really is something for everyone.

Here are a few of the highlights.

Today the Ovulators, Eugene's favorite all-girl glam rock band, play Sam Bond's. John Crider and Nancy Ream get jazzy jazz·y

 at the Jazz Station. Dan Neal Dan Neal (born August 30, 1949 in Corbin, Kentucky) was a former American Football player who played offensive line for eleven seasons between 1973 and 1983 for the Baltimore Colts and the Chicago Bears.  takes the stage at Luna.

Meanwhile, longtime Salem band Phamous Phaces - which played the International Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool, England, last year - will celebrate a CD release show at Diablo's/The Downtown Lounge.

On Saturday, Eugene blues legend Eagle Park Slim takes the stage for a birthday show at Quacker's. Cabinessence and Derby team up for a show at Sam Bond's. The Cheeseburgers bring a Buffettesque sound to Mac's, while jazz guitarist Jazz guitarists are guitar players who play jazz music using an approach to playing chords, melodies, and improvised solo lines which is called jazz guitar playing. The guitar has a long history in jazz music, both as an ensemble instrument performing chordal accompaniment, and as  Mike Denny sets up shop at the Ax Billy Grill.

Need more? Let's look to Sunday, when stalwart Mark Alan sets the mood at Jo Federigo's. Things will get jamming in a couple of spots, as the musicians of the Willamette Jazz Society jam at the Jazz Station, and bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. In general, bluegrasses are perennial with fine-leaved foliage that is bluish green in some species.  fans stomp their feet at Sam Bond's.
