The developer specifies his applications in a high-level (mostly declarative) fashion, from which native code is generated for multiple , manages daily operations for the 1,200-bed medical complex, including patient records, medicine tracking and hospital administration. "It's the central nervous system of the complex," says Nicolas Jodal, ARTech's vice president, who founded ARTech in 1988 with partner Breogan Gonda. The company first entered the Chinese market in 1992.

"The first thing to be done always is taking the time to get to know the culture. It's necessary to be patient in order to develop trust that leads to business ties," Jodal says.

ARTech's expansion into Asia won't stop with China. Japan is another key target, and the company has opened up an affiliate there. "We expect that by the end of this year Japan and China will account for 20% of our billing," Jodal says.

 Uruguay's Software Support Program, an industry group, the country exported US$80 million in tech products and services in 2004, well beyond the $250,000 in 1988. "Uruguay is the largest Latin American exporter, reaching 50 markets," says Luis Stolovich, the program's director. Things may just be getting started. Today, only 3% of Uruguayan software is Asia-bound.
