A CAMPAIGNER who helped raise money for a statue of Brian Clough Brian Howard Clough, OBE (21 March, 1935 – 20 September, 2004) was a successful footballer and subsequently football manager, most notable for his success with Derby County and Nottingham Forest.  to be placed in the middle of Nottingham hit out at vandals who defaced it with spray paint.

Graffiti artists sprayed white paint over the former Forest manager's face and an "S" on his jumper at about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The mess was cleaned up by Nottingham City Council Nottingham City Council is the city council for the unitary authority of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire. It consists of 55 councillors, representing a total of 20 wards. It is led by Jon Collins, of the majority Labour Party. Nottingham City Council is elected every four years. , but Paul Ellis, who chaired the committee which raised pounds 70,000 for the 8ft bronze statue, criticised the vandals.

He said: "We're obviously really upset about it. I cannot believe someone would do that to a statue loved by thousands of people, not only here in Nottingham but throughout the country."
