Best-selling author Michael J. Durant, CW4, U.S. Army (ret.), will share his experience as a military hero and the harrowing details of the military operation that inspired the movie Black Hawk Black Hawk

(born 1767, Sauk Sautenuk, Va.—died Oct. 3, 1838, village on the Des Moines River, Iowa, U.S.) Sauk Indian leader. Long antagonistic to whites, Black Hawk was driven into Iowa from Illinois in 1831.
 Down, as the keynote speaker for the 2005 Winter Conference Closing Breakfast.

His story of survival in the face of extreme adversity will provide an inspirational end for this year's Winter Conference.

A member of the secretive and elite 160th SOAR (A) Night Stalkers, Mr. Durant saw combat in the Persian Gulf Persian Gulf, arm of the Arabian Sea, 90,000 sq mi (233,100 sq km), between the Arabian peninsula and Iran, extending c.600 mi (970 km) from the Shatt al Arab delta to the Strait of Hormuz, which links it with the Gulf of Oman. , Panama and Iraq in addition to Somalia. But despite his many hours of combat and special operations Operations conducted in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments to achieve military, diplomatic, informational, and/or economic objectives employing military capabilities for which there is no broad conventional force requirement.  missions nothing could prepare him for the sudden turn of events that changed his life forever on that fateful morning in the fall of Oct. 3, 1993, while piloting an MH60 Blackhawk in Mogadishu, Somalia. Mr. Durant found himself gravely injured after the helicopter was shot down and crash landed, leaving him with a broken back and snapped right femur femur (fē`mər): see leg. . He was rescued by two Delta Force operators; however, he was recaptured and beset by an angry mob, stripped, beaten and certain of his own pending death, only to be spared, carried off in captivity, shot, publicly interrogated, and finally, after eleven days, released. This story and the events surrounding it have been made famous by the movie Black Hawk Down.

Mr. Durant joined the 160th Special Operations Group Special Operations Group may refer to the:

 on Aug. 1, 1988. Assigned to D company, he performed duties as flight lead and standardization instructor pilot. He participated in combat operations Prime Chance (Persian Gulf in 1989), Just Cause (Panama invasion in 1989), Desert Storm (Liberation of Kuwait in 1991) and Gothic Serpent (Somalia in 1993).
