Clipper crew set for leg to Panama.


THE ninth leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was conceived in 1995 by well-known yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and together with William Ward, founded Clipper Ventures, a company that would run the race. The first race set off a year later on 16 October 1996.  left Santa Cruz, California, on Thursday.

Liverpool 08 was third across the start line for the 3,116 nautical mile race to Panama.

Speaking before the start, Liverpool 08 skipper Ben Galloway said: "We're expecting to do a lot better than we did in Race 8 from Hawaii because this is a downwind down·wind

"We've had a massive crew change here so, although we may appear to be a bit slow to begin with, as we train them up, keep your eyes peeled and expect to see Liverpool 08 right up there."

The majority of the teams chose to fly the largest of their headsails but Liverpool 08 opted for their smaller Yankee Two as they crossed the line.
