ClioSoft Adds Multi-Site Support to Its Design Data Management System; SOS Adds Support for Multi-Site Data Management and Collaboration Using Internet-Enabled Technology.

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22, 1999--

UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
 and Linux Versions are Shipping,

Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Version Ships in January

ClioSoft, Inc., an EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  company focused on improving electronic design team productivity with its design data management system, announced today that it is introducing a new version of SOS SOS, code letters of the international distress signal. The signal is expressed in International Morse code as … — — — … (three dots, three dashes, three dots).  with Internet-enabled technology.

SOS version 2.10 allows design teams to share data and collaborate across multiple geographically dispersed sites. ClioSoft is also announcing that it is adding support for Windows-NT platforms to its existing UNIX and Linux platform support.

SOS version 2.10 maintains a safe repository for design data that engineers in the design team can just as easily access from a remote site as they can from the local site. SOS improves a design team's productivity by non-intrusively managing design data and enhancing designer-to-designer and designer-to-manager communication. By using SOS, design team leaders can track progress and tape-out designs with less overhead and more confidence.

"We believe that SOS is the easiest design data management system to setup, administer and use because of its simple and intuitive graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to
. Effective design data management requires project visibility for a design team to work at peak efficiency," said Srinath Anantharaman, ClioSoft Founder and President. "With the new version the productivity benefits of SOS can now be realized by design teams that are spread over multiple sites, using different platforms, anywhere in the world."

What's New

Client/Server architecture An environment in which the application processing is divided between client workstations and servers. It implies the use of desktop computers interacting with servers in a network in contrast to processing everything in a large centralized mainframe. See client/server.  allows multi-site team collaboration

SOS version adds remote site support so engineers in different locations can collaborate efficiently and work together on the same design.

Linux and Windows NT Support

SOS supports a heterogeneous network (networking) heterogeneous network - A network running multiple network layer protocols such as DECnet, IP, IPX, XNS.  of Unix, Windows NT and Linux platforms. Engineers can use different operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  running on different platforms, and still work together while sharing a common SOS project repository.

More About SOS and Design Data Management

SOS provides more than revision control Revision control (also known as version control (system) (VCS), source control or (source) code management (SCM)) is the management of multiple revisions of the same unit of information. . It allows for recovery from incorrect changes, remembers and recreates any stage in a design, provides for more reliable tape-outs, helps manage overlapping design activities and tracks project progress.

Some SOS features important to improving design team productivity are: -0-
-- Project revision control for the entire design project

-- Revision control for directories for true configuration
     management

-- Command line interface for scripting

-- Bubble-up alert icons for increased project visibility and
decreased errors resulting from lack of or missed communications

-- Ability to rewind a workspace back in time to quickly isolate and
     recover from incorrect changes

-- Customizable triggers and user interface to extend functionality

-- User definable tracking metrics for better project management

SOS allows a design team to restore design files from directories. For example, a project may consist of thousands of files organized in a directory structure. During development, not only do files change but also files and directories are often added, deleted, renamed or moved. Since SOS maintains a complete revision history of files as well as directories it can recreate any previous configuration of the project including the exact organization of directories. Without this feature it is like restoring from a backup tape See tape backup.  except you have no idea where the files will land up.
