Clio is an easy car to love; Supermini.

WINNER: Renault Clio 2005 to date pounds 4,500-pounds 12,000 THE Clio knocked the Honda Jazz from the top spot last year - and it holds on to its used supermini crown for the second year running.

With its stylish exterior and great handling, the Renault is an easy car to love. What's more, it was facelifted this year, which means values and availability of the outgoing models will improve even further. Factor in the vast numbers of Clios already about, and it's easier than ever to own one.

It's no surprise that the 1.5-litre dCi diesel unit is the best of the bunch. With 86bhp and 199Nm of torque on tap, it's punchy and average fuel economy of 64.2mpg - as well as emissions of 118g/km - helps keep running costs low.

Safety has always been high on Renault's list of priorities, and the Clio is no exception.

It scored a five-star occupant protection rating in Euro NCAP crash tests, and all models have at least six airbags.

Space isn't a problem either, as the cabin is especially roomy, and there's 288 litres of space available in the boot with the seats up.

Pay attention when buying, though, as the Clio was recalled for a dodgy brake light switch in 2007, and some owners have reported glitches with the top dead centre (TDC) sensor.

Automatic models were also recalled in 2006 due to an electronic glitch, so make sure that the necessary repairs have been carried out.

Even so, the Clio has all the vital supermini ingredients. Not only is it fun behind the wheel, frugal, practical and safe, it's also comfortable and refined.
