Clinton native is new Shrewsbury superintendent.

He has worked in the Shrewsbury schools for 12 years, first as assistant principal at Floral Street School, then principal, starting in 2001. He was named principal of Oak Middle School in 2006 and assistant superintendent last year.

Sawyer said his father and mother, a retired teacher, instilled a good sense of the importance in education in all three of their children, who are now all educators.

Clinton pride played a part in his history.

"From kindergarten in the Forbes School, to Parkhurst Elementary School, the middle and old high school, I had a lot of terrific teachers," Sawyer said. "There was a sense that if you work hard and put in the effort, good things would happen."
