Clinical trials begin for Lyme disease vaccine.


A clinical trial will begin for a candidate vaccine for Lyme Disease--the first Lyme vaccine in the world to be tested in humans. The clinical trial, which will test the safety of the vaccine in humans, is being conducted at the University of New Mexico The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a public university in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was founded in 1889. It also offers multiple bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degree programs in all areas of the arts, sciences, and engineering.  Medical School in Albuquerque. Antibody response to the vaccine will also be evaluated. Earlier studies showed that the vaccine provided complete protection against Lyme disease Lyme disease, a nonfatal bacterial infection that causes symptoms ranging from fever and headache to a painful swelling of the joints. The first American case of Lyme's characteristic rash was documented in 1970 and the disease was first identified in a cluster at  in mice. Results from the current trial in humans are expected early next year.
