:EICU) today announces that eight scientific abstracts demonstrating the clinical, financial, and organizational impact of its eICU([R]) Program are being presented at the American College American College is the name of:
  • American College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
  • The American College in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India
  • The American College of the Immaculate Conception, Leuven (also known as Louvain), Belgium
of Chest Physicians' annual conference, "Experience CHEST 2006," currently in session in Salt Lake City. The abstracts are based on research performed by clinicians at Avera Health Avera Health is a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, South Dakota and Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The network serves eastern South Dakota and surrounding states with hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and other health services at more than 100

The following are highlights of the findings and conclusions documented in these abstracts:

mortality rates and length of stay - Avera Health reported on the impact of eICU-ICU integration, demonstrating a 60% improvement in severity adjusted ICU mortality (observed ICU mortality versus predicted ICU mortality) and a 35% improvement in severity adjusted ICU length of stay (observed ICU length of stay versus predicted ICU length of stay) for ICUs with good integration as oppose to those without.

Increased use of best practices - Compliance with best practices has been shown to improve outcomes and reduce complications. However, many health systems struggle to implement these practices across their hospitals. Avera Health and Parkview Health each evaluated the impact of eICU clinicians supporting bedside caregivers with the implementation of ICU best practices. With added support from eICU clinicians, Parkview Health improved compliance with the IHI IHI Institute for Healthcare Improvement (Boston, MA, USA)

The IHI Ventilator bundle has been shown to reduce cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a sub-type of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) which occurs in people who are on mechanical ventilation through an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube for at least 48 hours.  and their associated cost, while glucose control has been shown to improve ICU mortality.

Improved effectiveness of rapid response teams - Rapid response teams have been shown to improve clinical outcomes for patients deteriorating on medical/surgical floors. However, unlike Commonwealth countries, rapid response teams in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  often do not include a physician. Parkview Health evaluated the effect of their eICU intensivists participating "virtually" with their rapid response team. The result was a 32% reduction in non-ICU cardiac arrests and impressive nurse satisfaction.

Impact on Critical Care training - Memorial Hermann in conjunction with the University of Texas Medical School and Saint Luke's Health System each included Critical Care Fellows in their eICU care model. Each fellow was surveyed regarding his or her experience. All twelve fellows indicated that they believe the eICU Program saves lives and want to work in a hospital that uses the eICU Program, and ten of twelve fellows indicated that they believe that the eICU Program reduces malpractice exposure.

"The scientific evidence continues to emerge that this innovative care delivery model and patient care tools not only improve the quality of care delivered to our sickest patients in the intensive care unit, but can impact physician satisfaction and reimbursement and care to patients throughout the hospital," said Brian Rosenfeld M.D., Executive VP and Chief Medical Officer for VISICU.

All eight abstracts are published in a CHEST journal supplement. APACHE III APACHE III Acute Physiology & Chronic Health Evaluation Intensive care A 'third-generation' system for estimating the risk of hospital death in adult ICU Pts based on physiological assessments of most severely affected values during the first 24 hrs in the ICU  algorithms were used to define the predicted mortality risk for the Avera Health abstract. The APACHE III database is used to estimate the mortality risk for individual ICU patients using chronic health status information, severity of illness on ICU admission, age, prior length of stay and ICU admission diagnosis. About VISICU

VISICU, Inc. (NASDAQ:EICU) is a healthcare information technology and clinical solutions company focused on transforming the delivery of critical care through its eICU([R]) Program. The eICU Program restructures the practice of critical care by using remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  technology to allow health systems to centralize scarce critical care trained staff to improve coverage and for earlier intervention to prevent or manage crises. A study (Crit Care Med 2004; 32:31-38) documented the clinical and financial benefits of the program. The eICU Program enables hospitals to meet The Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards. For more information, visit www.VISICU.com.
