Clinical Research Network (CRN) update #7: meeting recruitment goals in clinical research: lessons learned (part two). This month's article focuses on the unique recruitment and retention strategies developed by the second project of the CRN CRN Computer Reseller News CRN Crown CRN Council for Responsible Nutrition CRN Crane CRN Community Recycling Network CRN Course Reference Number CRN Center for Responsible Nanotechnology CRN Cornish (SIL code, UK) , STEPS. STEPS (Strength Training Effectiveness Post-Stroke) is evaluating whether functional outcomes, primarily gait speed, are best improved in patients post stroke by: (1) strength training as an adjunct adjunct (aj´ungkt), n a drug or other substance that serves a supplemental purpose in therapy. adjunct to body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT); (2) locomotor-based strength training (LBST LBST Pounds Static Thrust ) compared with muscle-specific strength training as an adjunct to BWSTT; and (3) LBST compared with BWSTT. The recruitment goal of 80 was met. Attendees heard an update on current research in the physical therapy treatment of individuals who had a stroke. The end of the session focused on the STEPS study (the purpose of study, recruitment, how to refer a patient to the study). These in-service sessions were very well received and resulted in many referrals. * Sessions also were held for stroke support groups at hospitals in communities close to the study sites. Exercise classes * Classes (45 minutes long) were held for stroke support groups at several Los Angeles-area community hospitals. At the end of each class, the STEPS study (purpose of study, recruitment, how to become involved) was discussed. This was also a very successful approach in recruiting many STEPS subjects. Overall, the participants were very proud of it! Included on the certificate was the date of their 6-month follow-up evaluation (a great reminder). Many participants reported that they put the certificate on their wall to remind themselves to continue exercising every day! Participant Appreciation Party * As a special thanks for their participation, the California sites held a joint "STEPS Participant Appreciation Party" for all participants and families. |
