Clinical Research Network (CRN) update, #11: STEPS investigators to present outcomes at the Combined Section Meeting (CSM).

STEPS (Strength Training Effectiveness Post-Stroke) co-principal investigators David A Brown, PT, PhD, Sara Mulroy, PT, PhD, and Katherine Sullivan, PT, PhD, will present primary study outcomes at CSM CSM - ["CSM - A Distributed Programming Language", S. Zhongxiu et al, IEEE Trans Soft Eng SE-13(4):497-500 (Apr 1987)].  on Friday, February 16, 2006, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The session is titled "Strength-Training Effectiveness Post Stroke: Results of the STEPS Clinical Trial." One of the 4 CRN CRN Computer Reseller News

 projects, STEPS was designed to evaluate whether functional outcomes, primarily gait speed, are best improved in patients post-stroke by:

(1) strength training as an adjunct intervention to body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT);

(2) locomotor-based strength training (LBST LBST Pounds Static Thrust ) compared with muscle-specific strength training as an adjunct intervention to BWSTF; and

(3) LBST compared with BWSTT. In addition to describing the effects of these physical therapy intervention protocols on improvement of walking ability in individuals who have had stroke, the session also will include discussion of the clinical implications of the multisite randomized clinical trial randomized clinical trial,
n a clinical study where volunteer participants with comparable characteristics are randomly assigned to different test groups to compare the efficacy of therapies.
. The session is cosponsored by the Neurology neurology (nrŏl`əjē, ny–), study of the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the human nervous system.  Section and the Foundation for Physical Therapy.
