, Tuesday announced the appointment of Gary Blackburn, Ph.D., to the position of vice president, scientific affairs.

Blackburn brings more than 15 years of clinical diagnostics experience to the post where he will manage CMS' research and development activities, both in-house and via external collaborations. In addition, he will also manage the company's intellectual property and technology development.

"Dr. Blackburn brings in-depth management skills that will help CMS introduce breakthrough products for a range of diagnostic applications," said Jon F. Kayyem, Ph.D., the company's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "CMS will benefit tremendously from his status as one of the diagnostics industry's leading business development experts." Blackburn joins CMS after serving as director of technology management at Boehringer Mannheim Corp. -- a leading biochemical research, pharmaceutical and clinical diagnostics company that was recently acquired by Hoffman-La Roche. He was responsible for evaluating and negotiating licenses to acquire promising new technologies.

Prior to his tenure at Boehringer Mannheim, Blackburn served as director of research and director of licensing and strategic planning at diagnostic systems innovator IGEN International Inc. He directed the development of IGEN's electrochemiluminescence (ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic) A digital circuit composed of bipolar transistors in which the emitter ends are wired together. ECL gates switch faster than TTL gates, but consume more power. See TTL, I2L and bipolar.
