Clinical Data Indicate That DOXIL is Useful for Treating Patients with Advanced Kaposi's Sarcoma.

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--SEQUUS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:SEQU) today reported results from a randomized clinical trial randomized clinical trial,
n a clinical study where volunteer participants with comparable characteristics are randomly assigned to different test groups to compare the efficacy of therapies.
comparing DOXIL with combination bleomycin bleomycin /ble·o·my·cin/ (ble-o-mi´sin) a polypeptide antibiotic mixture obtained from cultures of Streptomyces verticellus; used as the sulfate salt as an antineoplastic.

The PWA Self-Empowerment Movement believes that those diagnosed as having AIDS should "take charge of their own life, illness, and care, and to minimize . These data, which were presented at the "XI International Conference on AIDS" held in Vancouver this July, indicate that, in the patient population enrolled in the trial, DOXIL was more effective in treating advanced AIDS-KS than combination BV therapy. In this trial, DOXIL patients showed a 58.7% total response rate vs. 23.3% for the BV treated group.

At the Vancouver AIDS conference, Dr. Simon Stewart of St. Mary's Hospital in London presented data from a clinical trial comparing DOXIL with combination BV therapy. A total of 241 patients with advanced AIDS-KS were enrolled in the trial. Of these, 121 patients (116 of whom were assessable) received DOXIL and 120 patients (102 of whom were assessable) received BV. Response data showed 7 complete responses (5.8%) and 64 partial responses (52.9%) for the DOXIL group versus 1 complete response (0.8%) and 27 partial responses (22.5%) for the BV group. The mean time to response was 49 days in the DOXIL group and 57 days in the BV group.

Dr. Stewart reported on selected adverse events, including: nausea and vomiting Nausea and Vomiting Definition

Nausea is the sensation of being about to vomit. Vomiting, or emesis, is the expelling of undigested food through the mouth.
(15.7% in the DOXIL group and 25% in the BV group); alopecia (3.3% in the DOXIL group and 8.3% for the BV patients); and neuropathy (8.3% for DOXIL and 26.7% for BV). In this study, DOXIL was more myelosuppressive: 76.0% versus 56.6% of patients had a neutrophil count less than 1.5 x 10 to the ninth power/L during treatment.

SEQUUS Pharmaceuticals is developing DOXIL for use in treating advanced forms of cancer, including KS and solid tumors. DOXIL has been available in the United States since December 1995 for the treatment of KS in people with AIDS whose disease has progressed on prior combination chemotherapy or in patients who are intolerant to such therapy. In Europe, DOXIL is marketed under the tradename CAELYX(TM).
