Clinical Data Completes Phase III Enrollment of Vilazodone for Depression.

On Schedule for Q3 2007 Assessment of Top-Line Efficacy and Genetic Biomarker Results

NEWTON, Mass. -- Clinical Data, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLDA) announced today that its PGxHealth Division has completed enrollment in a pivotal Phase III study of Vilazodone, in development for the treatment of depression. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was launched in the first quarter of 2006 and has now reached its target with dosing of 410 patients with major depressive disorder enrolled at ten investigative sites. This is one of two pivotal trials required for a new drug application, which the Company hopes to file with the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. In conjunction with this study, Clinical Data is analyzing genetic biomarkers that may correlate with the prediction of response to Vilazodone. The Company anticipates announcing top-line efficacy and genetic biomarker results in the third calendar quarter of 2007.

Carol R. Reed, M.D., the Company's Chief Medical Officer, said, "The treatment of depression is currently hampered by overall poor response to first-line treatment options. As demonstrated in the STAR*D study1, response rates of less than 50% are the norm. Vilazodone has a novel mechanism of action based on its dual serotonergic properties as an SSRI and 5HT1A partial agonist. This molecule would be the first of its kind in the market. With the addition of genetic markers that predict higher response rates in targeted populations, Vilazodone may prove to be an even more effective therapy for depressed patients."

About Vilazodone

Vilazodone is a dual serotonergic antidepressant in pivotal Phase III clinical trials that Clinical Data is developing with a companion biomarker which will act as a genetic-based, predictive screening tool to guide the use of this novel antidepressant. It is both a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor and a 5HT1A partial agonist that has been found to have an acceptable safety profile for this stage of development. As approximately one-half of depressed patients do not achieve satisfactory results with current first-line treatment options, Clinical Data hopes to develop a product that combines a genetic test with Vilazodone to assist physicians in matching patients with a treatment that is likely to work for that patient in the first instance. The worldwide rights to develop and commercialize Vilazodone were acquired from Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, in September 2004.

About Depression and the Antidepressant Market

The Surgeon General's Office estimates that 5.3% of American adults, approximately 17 million people, suffer from depressive illness. In 2004 according to IMS, the treatment of this illness generated sales of more than $9.75 billion in antidepressants. While many patients derive significant benefit from currently available therapies, the extent to which the benefit is due to the pharmacology of a particular drug is unknown in most cases because the 'placebo' effect in clinical trials for depression is often significant. A 2002 meta-analysis of 47 clinical studies comparing antidepressants against placebo2 suggests that a significant proportion of patients on antidepressant therapies are benefiting not from the drug but from a placebo effect. It is believed, however, that some people may be genetically predisposed to depression (and one or more of its etiologies) and that it may be possible to identify certain genetic biomarkers that might help to predict the likelihood of a patient's pharmacological response to a given antidepressant.
