Clinical Data Announces Discovery of Novel Genetic Link to Development of Schizophrenia.

PGxHealth Findings Co-Published in Molecular Psychiatry Suggest Association Between Cytokine Receptor Gene Region and Schizophrenia

NEWTON, Mass. -- Clinical Data, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLDA) announced today that its PGxHealth Division has published, in Molecular Psychiatry, results demonstrating a novel association between a cytokine receptor gene region and schizophrenia. The publication was the result of a successful industry-academic collaboration between PGxHealth and The Zucker Hillside Hospital Division of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, the Harvard Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics, and Harvard Medical School. The publication reports convergent results from two independent studies that compared genetic variants in individuals with schizophrenia to individuals who do not have the disease. A whole genome scan revealed a strong effect of a novel region near the CSF2RA gene, and sequencing revealed specific genetic variants in the CSF2RA and IL3RA genes associated with schizophrenia.

These results suggest that genetic variants in this region contribute to risk of developing schizophrenia and may ultimately contribute to a genetic diagnostic test that assesses this risk and/or defines schizophrenia subtypes. PGxHealth has filed patent applications related to its findings and will consider commercializing the results with other interested parties whose focus is developing diagnostic tests for schizophrenia.

The results contributed by PGxHealth were derived from its CARING (Clozapine and Agranulocytosis Relationships Investigated by Genetics) study; pharmacogenetic research that culminated in development of its PGxPredict[TM]:CLOZAPINE test, a recently launched test that provides information about the probability of developing agranulocytosis in response to clozapine. A subset of the CARING study was used to identify genes associated with schizophrenia. PGxHealth continues to conduct research in this area, and these efforts are expected to lead to additional novel findings.

The paper, entitled "Converging Evidence for a Pseudoautosomal Cytokine Receptor Gene Locus in Schizophrenia," appears in the March 20 issue of Molecular Psychiatry.
